The best way to do this is to convert the length first before going for the area. In a metre, there are 100 centimetres. So a metre squared (1m x 1m) will be 100cm x 100cm. Doing this gives:

100 x 100 = 10,000

Thus there are 10,000cm2 in a square metre.
