A "metre" is the English [U.K.] spelling of "meter" (American.) A meter is approximately 39," just as our Yard is 36". A "square" measurement is an area defined by side 1 x side 2 of a "square," or in this case 39" X 39".

The best way to do this is to convert the length first before going for the area. In a metre, there are 100 centimetres. So a metre squared (1m x 1m) will be 100cm x 100cm. Doing this gives:

100 x 100 = 10,000

Thus there are 10,000cm2 in a square metre.
