Yes, a square is a parallelogram, but we'd call it a "special type" of parallelogram.

A square is also a special type of rectangle, rhombus, and quadrilateral.

Properties of a parallelogram:

  • Interior angles add up to 360 degrees
  • Exterior angles add up to 360 degrees
  • Opposite sides are congruent
  • Opposite sides are parallel
  • Opposite angles are congruent
  • Adjacent angles are supplementary
  • Diagonal midpoints make perpendicular lines

A square satisfies all of those requirements.

The definition of a parallelogram is "a quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel and equal".

Since a square has two opposite parallel and equal sides, it does classify as a parallelogram.
