A polygon is a plane area which is bounded by straight lines. It has the same number of sides as vertices and is classified according to the number of vertices that it has. That said, in the case of 4, it is called a 4-sided shape - a quadrilateral. Polygons are named using Greek prefices for the number of vertices:3 = triangle

4 = quadrilateral

5 = pentagon

6 = hexagon

7 = heptagon (less commonly, septagon)

8 = octagon

9 = nonagon

10 = decagon

11 = hendecagon (not well known)

12 = dodecagon.


Beyond 12, it is recommended that you simply use the number: for example "37-gon" for a polygon with 37 vertices. The exception are

  • you are with a Greek audience,
  • you are pretentious,
  • you wish to obfuscate rather than communicate.
