The Golden quadilateral project is an ambitious project undertaken to build 5800 kms of roads connecting the four metros of India. The entire project entails an expenditure of 60000 crores and aims at building two ,four and some time six laned highways. The National highway authority mod India or NHAI is nodal agency to oversee the implementation of the project. The project is expected to bring economic benefits to the tune of $1.5 bilion to our economy according to some reports. Its real worth however can be measured in terms of employment opportunities, rapid movement of goods and a boost to the road transport industry as a whole. The project entails connectivity to major ports which would enable to implement an effecient multimodal policy. However some teeting problems do remain.Land aquisition is perhaps the most contentious. The project is several years behind schedule.Charges of corruption as highlighted by the slain whisleblower Satyendra Dubey and sub standard quality of work are other problems plaguing the ambitious infrastructure project.
