The top hinge screws want to pull out of the door and frame due to the cantilevered centre of gravity of the door. At the bottom hinge the opposite happens and the screws are not in tension because the lower part of the door tends to "push" towards the frame.

It is therefore common practice to fit two upper hinges close to one another near the top of the door and have the bottom hinge by itself near the bottom of the door. (All the above assuming the door is rigid and have some weight that cannot be negligible).

A third hinge fitted midpoint between a top and a bottom hinges serves no purpose other than evenly supporting a thin flexible door against wind etc.

What is the perimeter of a door?

The perimeter of a door is the total distance around its outer edges. To calculate the perimeter of a door, you would measure the length of all four sides of the door and then add them together. For example, if a door is rectangular with a length of 80 inches and a width of 36 inches, the perimeter would be calculated as follows: 80 + 80 + 36 + 36 = 232 inches.

What is the standard width of French doors?

What is the rough opening for a door?

A "rough opening" is the term for the opening in a wall into which a door or window will be fitted. It is slightly larger than the outside of the frame of the door or window to give some tolerance (space) to install it and get it in the exact position and square. It is measured between the structure to which the door or window will be fixed, such as the studs or masonry. The amount of tolerance between the frame and the structure varies depending on the type of construction and how accurately it is built, but is often in the order of 10mm all around the frame. An air seal and expanding foam are sometimes installed into this gap , and linings or architraves, and claddings cover it.
