Any two-dimensional, closed figure that is not made up entirely of line segments is not a polygon. Examples would include:

  • circle
  • closed semi-circle

A polygon is a closed 2-dimensional shape bounded by straight sides. A shape is not a polygon if:

  • it is 1 or 3 dimensional (or in higher dimensions),
  • it has one or more sides which are not straight (for example a circle of ellipse)
  • it is not closed (two lines forming an angle)
  • it intersects itself (5 pointed star).
