In our area a flat roof is defined as any roof with less than 3:12 pitch and must have Ice and Water shield or other equivelant materials installed to prevent damage. Usually up to and including a 2:12 Pitch can be protected with a Build Up Roofing system or BUR roof. Another usual material is what we call a Single Ply or Membrane roof. These materials are like a big rubber inner tube being pulled over the roof and can be attached with ballast (rock) or mechanically. Most today are a white material but collored are available from some manufactures. ALWAYS check with your local building official for the actual definition and requirements in your area. Terry
