Pi is actually a ratio of the Circumference of a circle over the diameter. The importance of this is that it allows you to measure every part of a circle, from area to diameter when you have little information and precisely. By having a precise ratio, we can do complex formulas and calculations with out crashing computers and with relative ease our selves. It was exploited by Euclid who basically invented modern day geometry.
