There are 22 brown shoes and 44 black shoes.
To do this, you divide it by three (two thirds of the shoes are black, one third is brown - that's where you get 3 from) and then give the black shoes 2 shares and the brown shoes 1.
Someone please explain this better than me!
a+b=23
b=a+3
a+b
a+(a+3)=23
a+a=23-3
2a=20
a=10
green marbles=10
blue marbles =23-10
=13

Gina is 11 years old right now:
G = Gina's age now
B = Bridgette's age now
eqn. 1
G + 9 = B
eqn. 2
2(G - 2) = B - 2
substituting from eqn. 1 into eqn 2
2(G-2) = G + 9 - 2
simplifying
2G - 4 = G + 7
subtracting G from both sides and adding 4 to both sides
G = 11 (Gina is 11 years old right now)
so
B = 20
two years ago Gina was 9 and Bridgette was 18 - yup Bridget was twice as old as Gina two years ago and is currently (and has been since Gina was born) 9 years older than Gina.

Equation 1: M = L + 24;
Equation 2: M + 2 = 2(L + 2)
Substitute M: L + 24 + 2 = 2L + 4
Subtract L from each side: 26 = L + 4
Subtract 4 from each side: 22 = L
Max is 46 and Liam is 22; in 2 years Max will be 48 and Liam 24.

In this hypothetical problem written by Richard Rusczyk:
Tweedledum says, "The sum of your weight and twice mine is 361 pounds." Tweedledee says, "Contrariwise, the sum of your weight and twice mine is 362 pounds." If they are both correct, how much do Tweedledum and Tweedledee weigh together?
Tweedledum and Tweedledee weigh 120 and 121 pounds respectively.
(NB: Tweedledum and Tweedledee never actually had this converstion, and in the original book their weight remains a mystery...)
