Charles Babbage was a mathematician living in the 19th century who created designs for two calculating machines. He was regarded as a talented mathematician and his machines, the "difference engine" and the "analytical engine" were both designed to solve mathematical calculations.

History shows him to be a far better designer than builder because neither of them were completed by him. Despite that, it is generally regarded that the operating principles of the machines were similar to those of modern computers.

Although his reputation was damaged by the failure to complete either of the engines, two difference engines have since been built and tested. One is now in the London Science Museum and the other in the computer history museum in California. Both models were built as far as possible using manufacturing tolerances achievable in the 19th century and both operate according to Babagge's description.
