Through the 2008 season, since the NFL went to a 16 game regular season in 1978, the 2008 San Diego Chargers and the 1985 Cleveland Browns are the only two teams to have won a division title with an 8-8 record. Incredibly, since 1978 there have only been two 11-5 teams that did not make the playoffs. They were the 2008 New England Patriots and the 1985 Denver Broncos. The two seasons that have seen an 8-8 team win a division are also the two seasons that have seen an 11-5 team not make the playoffs.

Does the team with the best record in baseball pick their opponent in the playoffs?

In each league, the team with the best record normally plays the Wild Card team. The exception is that if the team with the best record and the Wild Card team are from the same division, then the team with the best record plays the division winner with the worst record.

Which team makes the playoff The team with the best overall record or the team with the best division record?

It depends upon the league/sport. In the NFL, for example, the team with the best overall record wins their division. In the event of a tie, the division record acts as the tiebreaker. I believe the best conference record wins the conference in NCAA Football, regardless of overall record. Then there are the league like the NHL, where a team earns 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie or post regulation loss--with the team accumulating the most points winning their division/conference.

What was the last NFL team to win a division with a non winning record?

Prior to the 2008 season, the last team to win a division without a winning record was the 1985 Cleveland Browns, who won the AFC Central Division with a record of 8-8 as well.

Wild card in baseball?

In most cases, the division winner with the best overall season record plays the wildcard team and the other two division winners play each other. But, in the case where the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record come from the same division, the division winner with the second overall best record plays the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record plays the division winner with the third best overall record. Confusing? Kinda, and kinda not really fair either, but MLB does not want two teams from the same division playing each other in the first round of the playoffs.

How are the MLB postseason matchups determined?

By the winners of each division and one wildcard team from each league. Wildcard team faces the best record team in each league unless the team with the best record and the wildcard team are from the same division. In that case, the wildcard team plays the divisional winner with the next best record.
