Basketball was originated by James A. Naismith on December 4th 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts. The actual start of "the game of basketball" began on January 26th, 1892 when Naismith wrote the "rules of basketball". The name was derived by the fact that the "goals" were actually peach baskets and the object was to put the ball in the basket.
