The word dollar is derived from German Taler (Thaler) - also a unit of currency. (The word had sometimes been used as a nickname for Spanish pieces of eight, which cirulated in the American colonies).

It is generally thought that "dollar" comes from the Low German "daler" which in turn comes from "taler" (or thaler). This in turn originated as "Joachimstaler" a large silver coin of varying value in the Germany.. American's used the word dollar for Spanish pieces of eight. On July 6, 1785, they officially adopted dollar when they set up U.S. currency.
