Since the Declaration of Independence was created in 1776, the US Centennial was celebrated in 1876. The Centennial Exposition was in Philadelphia.
It got the nickname because it became a state in 1876, 100 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
A centennial refers to the 100th year, so it itself is only one year. If it was 100 years since the birth of someone or some historical event, this year would be regarded as the centennial year. A century refers to a complete set of 100 years.
