The neighbours of the early Romans, before they started their imperial expansion, were other Latin cities, the Etruscans (to the north), the Sabines (to the east), the Aequi, the Volsci and the Hernici to the south. The Etruscans lived in modern day Tuscany, western Umbria and northern Lazio. The Sabines lived in eastern Lazio and southwestern Umbria. The other lived only in Lazio.
