In the US, both solid white lines and double white lines are used to mark areas of prohibited lane changes in multi-lane traffic. Broken (dashed) yellow lines, solid yellow lines, and double yellow lines are used to separate traffic moving in opposite directions.

On British roads, two continuous white lines along the middle of the road means do not cross over the white lines to overtake another vehicle travelling in front. These lines are usually found where it is dangerous to overtake, a blind bend, or a steep (hidden) dip in the road ahead, etc.

(in the US) Solid double whilte lines down the middle of the road mean the same thing as solid double yellow lines. NO PASSING ZONE.
