From Dr. Sacks' website faq:
Q: What happened to the patients and other characters in the AWAKENINGS movie? The movie AWAKENINGS is a fictionalized drama based on Dr. Sacks true account. There is no Dr. Sayer, but Dr. Sacks is still practicing medicine and writing books & articles. There is no Nurse Eleanor. The patient "Leonard" died, as have all the AWAKENINGS patients--but many lived long and relatively rewarding lives. Their real story is told in the book AWAKENINGS .

The real Leonard Lowe, portrayed by Robert De Niro in the film "Awakenings," was a patient who had been in a catatonic state due to encephalitis lethargica for nearly three decades. After receiving the experimental drug L-DOPA in the late 1960s, he experienced a temporary revival and regained mobility and speech. Unfortunately, his improvements were not permanent, and he eventually returned to a catatonic state. Leonard Lowe passed away in 2017 at the age of 79.
