Square meters and meters measure two different things (area and length, respectively), so you can't convert between the two. (It's like asking what number is purple.)

1 square meter is the area of a square with sides of length one meter. But it is also the area of a rectangle with sides 1/2 meter and 2 meters (and infinitely many other combinations of length and width--or infinitely other shapes with various dimensions).

A square foot is a unit of area. A metre is a unit of distance. The two units are therefore incompatible.
