Though i passed my GCSE Maths in 2008, i think i know the answer. See my method below:
8x+ 14= -10
Add 10 to both sides to get rid of the -10. This leaves you with;
8x+ 28= 0
You can guess that x needs to be a negative number that you can multiply by 8 to get -28.
7x8= 28, so -7x8=-28
Therefore;
x=-7
Interesting but unfortunately wrong, 8x-7 =-56 (maybe I'm wrong though I did my A-levels over 20 years ago)
8x + 14 = -10
8x = -10 - 14
8x = -24
x = -24/8
x = -3

6x plus 3 equals 8x plus 14 when solved mathematically is equal to x = -5.5.
x=4, y=9 (4,9)
8x-17=6x+112x=28x=14
6x = 8x+28 6x-8x = 28 -2x = 28 x = -14
