∙ 13y agoAssuming you're referring to actual places on earth. It's because if (looking down from the north) you fly 'clockwise from X to Y, you're flying in the opposite way to the spin of the earth, meaning your destination comes towards you. Flying back from Y to X - you're travelling with the spin, and so your destination keeps travelling in the same direction you are.
Air miles are more direct. When driving across a mountain range for instance there is often a lot of winding and turning involved to get from one point to another. That is why the driving distance between two places that are reasonably far apart is nearly always longer then the flying distance.
10/60 x 900 = 150 km
It will increase until you hit 45 degrees and the it will begin to drop.
Aircraft fly in the direction of their destination regardless which way around the world that may be. That's a trick question. To an observer standing at the North Pole, a plane flying east to west is going clockwise. To an observer standing at the South Pole, a plane flying west to east is going clockwise. And, of course, some planes fly over the poles. But if you only consider planes that are flying east/west, they are going both clockwise and counterclockwise, depending on which direction you are viewing them from.
"As the crow flies" means a straight line distance between two points, and that would mean flying. There are several web sites on line, that will calculate the flight distance for you, as long as you input the origin and the destination.
You can, if in reasonable distance, with the right weather conditions.

A flying lap is a complete lap in qualifications. The driver leaves the pits, which is at a point after the start-finish line so the time does not begin until the driver finishes that lap and passes through the start-finish line. If the driver does not get back into the pits and finishes that lap, then it is a flying lap. Of course after finishing that lap the driver goes back into the pits which is not a flying lap. So out of the 3 laps I have mentioned only the one in the middle is a flying lap, because that is the only one that can be measured. I think that what the authur of the above means, is: The driver leaves the pits and does a complete curcuit until he reaches the Start/Finish line. (Lap1) Without stopping or slowing down, he then completes another curcuit which is timed. (Lap2 - Flying Lap) Then once again, he completes another curcuit to regain entry to the Pits. (Lap3)
