No. There are 2.54 centimetres in an inch. The little tabs divide the inch into 16ths as I recall. the little tabs, which come in different sizes to denote different increments between each inch, are divisions of halves. ie, the inch is divided into one half, then each half into quarters, each quarters into eighths, each eighth into sixteenths, each sixteenth into thirty-seconds and on some rulers, each thirty-second into sixty-forths/
When you set a new tab, all default tabs prior to it are cleared. Default tabs after the last custom tabs that have been created will remain. So custom tabs override default tabs.
When you set a manual tab, all default tabs to the left of it are cleared. Tabs are only used when you hit the Tab key, so you would only clear the default tabs if you planned to use your own tabs.
If you look at the ruler you will see any tabs that have been manually set, as they will be on the ruler. Only the default tabs can be exclusively set in the Tabs dialog box. Left, Right, Center, Decimal and Bar tabs can be set through the ruler. You can't set leaders for tabs there though, but they are not kinds of tabs.
