Yes, I add a zero on the righthand end. (meaning to multiply by ten) That's roughly correct.

The reason this works: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft2 = (0.3048 m)2 = 0.092903 m2

So if you estimate that 1 ft2 = [approximately] 0.1 m2, rather than the exact conversion, then you'll be about 7% low on your estimate. Depending on what you need this conversion for, this level of accuracy may be sufficient.
