When you have three fourths of something, one fourth is still missing. If you have five sixths of something, only one sixth is missing, so you have more than if one fourth is missing (one sixth being a smaller portion missing than one fourth).

If you had ninety-nine one hundredths, only one one hundredth would be missing, meaning you would have nearly the whole thing.
