When you are talking about the age of a person (an adult) whose exact age you don't know you might say he/she is in his/her thirties or sixties.

In this scenario, it is pointless talking in thousands and only very rarely appropriate in hundreds. Conversely, you don't have the exact age so cannot talk in units or with any greater precision.
