A Prime number has exactly two distinct factors whereas a composite number has more than two distinct factors.

Examples:

  • Factors of 11 are 1 & 11 only, thus 11 is prime
  • Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 & 12, thus 12 is composite

A prime number has only 2 factors which are 1 and itself. Composite numbers are everything else except 1 and 0. 1 and 0 are neither prime, nor composite.
