The challenge for MySpace has been to avoid technological letdowns that degrade Web site performance and frustrate its rapidly expanding network of users. In its initial phases, MySpace operated with two Web servers communicating with one database server and a SQL Server database. This setup showed signs of stress as more users were added. Then, MySpace tried to reduce the load by adding more Web servers. However, one database server was not enough. Then, MySpace deployed three SQL server databases. However, this still caused the sire to lag behind. Then, MySpace scaled out by adding many cheaper servers to share the database workload. However, the workload was not distributed evenly. This would cause an overload in the storage area for a particular database.

So, MySpace switched to a virtualized storage architecture. Databases could write data to any available disk and eliminating an application's dedicated disk from becoming overloaded. MySpace also installed a layer of servers between the database servers and the Web servers to store and serve copies.

Despite these changes, MySpace still overloads. However, MySpace developers continue to redesign the Web site's database, software, and storage systems.
