The key to this is in the prefix that is used. The main ones that you hear are

2). centi- means one hundredth of

3). mili- means one thousandth of

so a centimeter is a hundredth of a meter.

so 300 hundredths is the same as 3 units, just as 300 centimeters is the same as 3 meters.
