The number you are multiplying by is the amount of 'lots' of the number you are multiplying.e.g. 5x4is the same as 4 'lots' of 5so it is 5+5+5+5and the answer is 20.e.g. 13x12is the same as 12 'lots' of 13so it is 13+13+13+13+13+13+13+13+13+13+13+13and the answer is 156.
