So say you wanted to add 5 to 3/4

first you would put the 5 over a 1, this makes it a fraction and does not break any rules. So now you have 5/1 + 3/4. You now need to make the denominators equal. If multiply the denominator of 5/1 by 4 then each fraction has the same denominator. But, UH OH! we forgot to multiply the top by four. after we do that the problem comes out as 20/4 + 3/4. Now we can just add the top numbers and ignore the denominators. Which gives us 23/4.
