I assume you're asking how to calculate a cube. Let's first understand a bit about what are called "powers" because a cube is one. A power is the number of times we multiply a number by itself ... it's a way of handling very big numbers and in the case of squares and cubes its a way of calculating area and volume.

Now if I take a number and multiply it by itself it is called the square of the number. eg 4 x 4 makes 16 ... so the square of 4 is 16.

If I multily a number by itself again its called the cube of the number, eg 4 x 4 x 4 makes 64 ... so the cube of 4 is 64.

So in answer to your question ... you get the cube of a number by multiplying it by itself twice ... another example would be 2 x 2 x 2 = 8 which is the cube of 2.

These are called the powers of a number ... the square being the number to the power of two and it's written by putting a small 2 up and to the right of the number, so the square of 4 would look like this 4², the cube is the number to the power of 3 and is written with a small 3 up and to the right of the number, so the cube of 2 would look like this 2³.

To illustrate a bigger power ... the sixth power of 4 ( or 4 to the power of 6) would be 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 and would be 4096! PCs don't have a way of typing a small 6 up and to the right unfortunately ... that would need a special mathematical type font.

I mentioned that the square (a number to the power of two) and the cube ( a number to the power of 3) are used to calculate area and volume. This is why they have their names ... if a sheet of cardboard, for example is 3 feet long by 3 feet wide it's area is 3 x 3 or 9 square feet. If a box is 3 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet high it's volume would be 3 x 3 x 3 or 27 cubic feet.

Hope that's not all too complicated for you
