Find a number bigger than 1 that goes evenly into both the top number and the bottom number and them both by this number. Repeat this until there are no more such numbers.

For example, to simplify 6/18:

  • the number 2 goes into both 6 and 18, so divide both by 2, which is 3/9;
  • the number 3 goes into each of those, so divide by 3, which is 1/3;
  • there is no smaller number bigger than 1 that goes into both 1 and 3, so 1/3 is in simplest form.

Another example of a fraction in simplistic form is 3/17. There is no number that goes evenly into both 3 and 17 that is bigger than 1.
