If you're basing time on hours and minutes, the hours would be whole numbers and the minutes would be fractions. Since there are 60 minutes in an hour, each minute is 1/60.

So, some examples:

20 minutes:

20/60 = 1/3

38 minutes:

38/60 = 19/30

1 hour, 25 minutes:

1 + 25/60 = 60/60 + 25/60 = 85/60

reduced, this would be:

17/12 or 1 5/12 ( One and five twelfths )

you need to set up a proportion. you need to make your fraction equal to x/60. your x is the number your trying to find and the 60 is there because that is how many units is in one full hour.

then you take the bottom number of your fraction and multiply it by x. take the top number of your fractio nand multiply it be 60. take 60 and divide it by the bottom number of your fraction. now you have x equals a certain number. take the x and put it over 60. lets say your x came out to be 23. that means your answer is 23/60. this means 23 minutes.

Think of the fraction as a part of the 60 minute hour and multiply. For example: 1/4 multiplied by 60 minutes is equal to 15 minutes.
