multiply the denominator with the whole number then add the numerator and then put the number on top of the original denominator.

for example:4 and 1/2. 2x4+1

2x4=8 + 1= 9

so 4 and 1/2 = 9/2 as an improper fraction.

Multiply the denominator by the whole number, add the numerator to that total and put the whole thing over the original denominator. 3 and 1/4 = 13/4
