∙ 11y agoVery interesting!
If suppose I do the experiment to find acceleration due to gravity at a place and if I get the value of g finally calculated as 9.7920 m/s2 then I give it as needed.
If I am supposed to give it only with two significant figure, then I would write g value as 9.8 m/s2
Or if it is to be with three significant figure, then I write as 9.79
Suppose, I do experiment to determine the density of a liquid. It is found to be 840.2 kg/m3
By scientific notation it could be written as 8.402 x 102 kg/m3
If it is enough to give with three significant figure then I write that one as 8.40 x 102 kg m-3
So I don't drop 0 though it does not have any value being in the second decimal place.
This is beauty of giving in significant figures

∙ 11y agoTo round a number to a particular digit, look at the digit immediately to the right of your target, in this case, the fourth significant figure. If that digit is 4 or lower, zero it and everything to the right of it out. If that digit is 5 or higher, increase the target digit by one and zero everything to the right of it out. If your target digit is a 9, increasing it will turn it to zero and increase the digit to the left of it by one.
0.020 has two significant figures. A significant figure is any non-zero digit or any embedded or trailing zero. Leading zeros are not significant.
1000.01 has six significant figures. A significant figure is any non-zero digit or any embedded or trailing zero. Leading zeros are not significant.
0.0034050 has five significant figures. A significant figure is any non-zero digit or any embedded or trailing zero. Leading zeros are not significant.
120.4 has four significant figures. A significant figure is any non-zero digit or any embedded or trailing zero. Leading zeros are not significant.
The number 327 to one significant figure is 300. The digit 3 is the first and only significant figure, and numbers after this digit are considered not significant.
The number 02 has one significant figure because a leading zero is not significant. So the significant figure is the digit 2.
1 significant figure. It can also be written as 4x10^6 (one sig fig)
Any digit in a number which is to the right of the first digit which isn't a zero, including the first digit
The number 46313 rounded to 1 significant figure is 50000. The significant digit is 5, so the number is rounded up to the nearest power of 10.
0.003 has one significant figure. A significant figure is any non-zero digit or any embedded or trailing zero. Leading zeros are not significant.
The measurement of 417.32 g has five significant figures. Each non-zero digit and any zeros between them are considered significant in a decimal number.
0.000892 to 1 significant figure is 0.0009 (1st significant figure is the first non-digit from the left, where in this case you can omit the number 2 since it will make no difference to the answer)

A significant figure is the number of digits to the left of the decimal place from the right most non zero digit to the left most digit, or the number of digits from the right most digit to the right of the decimal place to the left most digit. So, 5748 to two significant digits is 5700
Rounding a number to the nearest significant figure means rounding it to the nearest digit that indicates the precision of the measurement. This typically involves looking at the significant figures in the number and rounding to the appropriate level of precision. For example, 345.678 rounded to the nearest significant figure would be 300.
9, every number counts as a significant figure except leading zeroes and any zero without a different digit after it is not a significant figure unless there is a decimal point after it. i.e. 0500 has 1 significant digit, 501 has 3, and 500. has 3
