You find out what the distance is and then divide it by the amount of time it took.

You divide a known distance by the length of time it has taken to travel over it, this gives you speed. For instance if you travel 60 miles and it takes 1 hour, you divide 60 by 1, which leaves 60 so your speed is 60 miles per hour. If you travelled 60 miles and it took 2 hours then 60 divided by 2 is 30, so your speed was 30 miles per hour, and so on.
