To convert the number to a "normal" number, move the decimal point to the right or to the left, by the number of places indicated by the exponent, and discard the "times ten to the power...". Note that an integer has an implied decimal point right after the integer, for example, 3 is the same as 3.0. If the exponent is negative, move the decimal point to the left.

Examples:

2.5 x 106 = 2,500,000 (moved decimal point six positions to the right)

3 x 104 = 30,000 (moved implied decimal point 4 positions to the right)

4.7 x 10-3 = 0.0047 (moved decimal point 3 positions to the left - had to fill out with some zeroes)
