You break it up into smaller shapes which are less irregular. If these are more regular, you can calculate their contribution to the perimeter, and their area. You can then add these together.

If it is in the shape of an L or close this is how you do it. First split it in to 2 rectangles. Then find the area of that by doing Length x Width. Afther that just add them together and you have found the area!
