The ISI mark is granted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under its product certification scheme (Scheme-I). The usual steps are:

  1. Identify the Indian Standard (IS) for your product and check whether it is under a Quality Control Order, which makes ISI mandatory.

  2. Make sure the factory has the in-house testing equipment and quality controls the standard requires.

  3. Apply online on the BIS Manak Online portal with factory, product and testing details. Foreign manufacturers apply under FMCS and appoint an Authorised Indian Representative.

  4. BIS inspects the factory and draws samples for testing in a BIS-recognised lab.

  5. If samples pass, BIS grants the licence and you can print the ISI mark with your licence number (CM/L number). The licence stays under surveillance and must be renewed.

Note: electronics and IT products usually go under the separate CRS scheme (R-number), not ISI.
