Months and years are measures of time based on astronomical phenomena. The month is based on the length of time it takes for the moon to return to a given phase, such as full moon to full moon. A year is based on the time it takes the earth to made one complete revolution of the sun.
It should be noted that these measurements may vary depending on which method is used. There are different 'kinds' of months and years.

A year is the time that it takes for the earth to go around the sun. This is approximately 365 days. (A day is the length of time it takes for the earth to rotate once on its axis).

A month is usually a period of about 30 days based on a full lunar cycle (e.g.the length of time between two full moons). There are about 12 lunar cycles in a year which has resulted in many cultures adopting a twelve month calendar. However, different cultures may have different names and dates for the months of the year.
