Percentage is a fraction expressed where the denominator is 100. So if there was a question like this: The class has 12 boys and 8 girls; what percentage of the class is girls? The girls as a fraction of the total class is found by first finding the total number of people (12 + 8 = 20), then dividing: 8/20 = 2/5.

You can then express this as a decimal: 2/5 = 0.4, or convert to a fraction, which has 100 in the denominator: 100/5 = 20, so multiply the numerator by 20: 2 * 20 = 40, so the fraction is 40/100, which is 40%.

Or if you found it as a decimal (say by just dividing on the calculator) then just multiply by 100 to find the percent. 0.4 * 100 = 40, so it is 40%
