Convert one or the other so that they are the same units. 1 yd = 3 ft, so 4 yd = (4 yd)x(3 ft/yd) = 12 ft.

Ratio 4 ft : 4 yd is the same as ratio 4 ft : 12 ft --> simplify to 1 ft : 3 ft --> 1:3

You could convert feet to yards also, so that they are the same units. so 4 ft = (4 ft)/(3 ft/yd) = 4/3 yd.
