For 0.5, the last digit is in the tens place, so you put 5 over 10 (5/10) which is 1/2 reduced. For something like 0.5486, you would put 5486 over 10000 because the last digit (6) is in the ten thousandth's place. You could then reduce that fraction to 2743/5000. Anyway, 0.5 is equal to 1/2.
