You have to first convert each measure to an expression involving a single unit. Using inches would be easiest - e.g. 8ft 10in = (96 + 10)in = 106in. Then multiply to get the answer in square inches. If you want the answer in square feet you have to convert back by dividing by the number of sq. in. in a sq. ft., i.e. 144.

This is a perfect example of why the entire rest of the world uses meters and centimeters.
