How do you solve this simultaneous equation problem In 7 years Manuel will be twice as old as he was when Lupe was 9 years younger than he is now and Lupe will be one year older than he is now?

Let x and y be Manuel's and Lupe's age now.

1. In 7 years Manuel will be twice as old as he (Manuel) was when Lupe was 9 years younger than he (assuming this he means "Manuel") is now

(x+7)=2(x-9)

x+7=2x-18

x=25

2. (In 7 years) Lupe will be one year older than he (Manuel) is now

y+7=x+1

y=x+1-7

y=25-6

=19

Therefore now Manuel is 25 and Lupe is 19.

y=31

Therefore now Manuel is 37 and Lupe is 31.

So it depends what it really means.
