Here are the Rules to follow,

#1 Convert mixed fractions to Improper(top heavy) fractions.

#2 Bring to a common denominator(bottom number)

#3 Bring numerators(top numbers to equivalent values.

#4 Subtract the numertors

#5 Place numerators over denominators

#6 Convert back to a mixed fraction.

Here is an example.

2 1/5 - 1 3/4

#1 ; 11/5 - 7/4

#2 ; 5 x 4 = 20

#3 ; 11 x 4 = 44 & 7 x 5 = 35 (Note which numbers are multiplied together).

#4 ; 44 - 35 = 9

#5 ; 9/20

#6 ; This step can be ignored as numerator is smaller than the denominator.

NB For Addition of fractions use the same steps except '#4' ,where you ADD the numerators.
