Example: five eighths divided by two
Treat the whole number as a number divided by one
Bracket the fraction above the fraction bar and the number below the bar.
So:
(5/8) / (2/1)
Now invert the bottom line and multiply with the top line:
5/8 * 1/2
and multiply out:
= 5 / 16
you put the whole number over one like this 8/1
a fraction is a number that show part of a whole example: 1/2 2/5 ect. It should say "a fraction is a number that SHOWS part of a whole"
A fraction represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any number of equal parts. When spoken in everyday English, a fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are.
Given any whole number, x, you can write it as a rational traction in the form x/1. You can then multiply both the numerator and denominator by any non-zero integer to make an equivalent fraction.
You can make a mixed number with a whole number and a fraction. Ex. 1 3/4 is a mixed number.
A fraction. Usually a mixed fraction or improper fraction, depending how you decide to show the result.

To show a fraction as a product of a whole number and a unit fraction, you can divide the numerator by the denominator. The whole number will be the result of this division, and the remainder will be the numerator of the unit fraction. For example, if you have the fraction 7/3, you would divide 7 by 3 to get 2 with a remainder of 1, so 7/3 can be expressed as 2 1/3.
Given any whole number, x, you can write it as a rational traction in the form x/1. You can then multiply both the numerator and denominator by any non-zero integer to make an equivalent fraction.
You can make a mixed number with a whole number and a fraction. Ex. 1 3/4 is a mixed number.
To show a fraction on a number line, first identify the whole numbers that the fraction falls between. For example, for the fraction ( \frac{3}{4} ), locate 0 and 1 on the number line. Then divide the segment between these two whole numbers into equal parts corresponding to the denominator (4 parts in this case). Finally, count up to the numerator (3) and place a point at that division to represent the fraction ( \frac{3}{4} ).
An improper fraction has the top number ( numerator ) equal to or larger than the bottom number ( denominator ) such as 100 / 50 . So divide the bottom number into the top number to get a whole number and any remainder would show up as a proper fraction. Thus 100/50 = 2 and 103/50 = 2 and 3/50
it is...........two divided by three
the fraction 25/1 or any fraction equal to that, such as 50/2 25 cannot be expressed as a decimal because it is a whole number; to express it as a decimal would basically be 25.0
Decimals are there to show you a fraction. For example, 1 1/2 is the same as the decimal 1.5. It just shows you how close you are to a whole number in a different way than a fraction.
