Depends on the calculator you have. Sometimes you can plug in y1=a^2+b^2

then you can do y2=sqrt (y1)

Or you could do that all as one step and so

y1=Sqrt(a^2+b^2)

If you can't program your calculator, you can just square each side, put that into memory or write it down then take the square root of the sum.

Sometimes you have one side and the hypotenuse. You must then square the hypotenuse and subtract the side squared and that equals the other side squared. So once again, you will need to take a square root.
