A cubic yard means a volume the same as a cube that is one yard on each edge. In other words, it is 3 ft by 3 ft by 3 ft.

Now, understand that a pile of debris can be 1 yd3 and not be in the shape of a cube. It just would make a cube that size if you could squish it into the right shape.

Similarly, concrete is often measured in cubic yards. One yd3 of concrete (or, if it's easier to think of as 27 ft3) could be a 1 foot slab that covers an area of 27 square feet, or a 6 inch slab that covers an area of 54 square feet..... as long as if it were pushed into a cube, it would measure one yard on each edge.
