To convert decimals to fractions.

place the decimals over '1. 0000'. The number of 'zeroes' is the same as the number of decimal places above.

Hence

0.3175/1.0000

Cancel down the decimal point

03175/10000

The 'zero' in theh numerator is trivial and can be discounted. Hence

3175/10000

Since both number end in '5' and/or '0' they will cancel down by '5'.

Hence

635/2000

Repeat by '5' again.

127/400

This will not cancel down any further.

NB

For decimals recurring to infinity there is a different technique.

For irrational decimals , such as 'pi' , cannot be converted to a fraction.
