When using scientific notation, you shift the decimal place over until there is only one digit in front of the decimal place and count how many times the decimal moved. 55,000 would be 5.5x10^4 because the decimal moved over four spots to the left. If the number was .00055 then the answer would've been 5.5x10^-4 because the decimal moved 4 places to the right.
